The Trough of Bowland, Lancashire

If we're insta friends you may be aware that we had a big old bike situation headache, in that our rack was stolen. We're not dwelling on it though, but after a morning spent having police and insurance conversations, come the afternoon we were frustrated and Apollo and Aura's energy was creeping up and up.

So, into the car we clambered and drove out from the beautiful city of Lancaster and up onto the Trough of Bowland

The first top was a high point overlooking Over Wyresdale...

From there we gazed out onto the hazy horizon where the low cloud had caught itself beneath the hills.

All the nearby footpaths were closed off for nesting birds and dogs were absolutely not allowed. We rerouted and adjusted our plans to find a location clear for the dogs to run free.

Sure enough just further down the moors the paths were open for all...

...which meant exactly this...

...and a bit of this...

We continued walking, the temperatures had dropped considerably the last few days and wearing my duel layered goretex Arcteryx jacket certainly didn't feel over the top!

To keep warm walked briskly through the hills...

Stopping occasionally for a good scent...

Or a moment to drink in the beautiful views out over the coast and as far as Ireland...

After the longest time watching out with Apollo at my side, we dipped down steeply into the Forest of Bowland.

We were welcomed by beautiful never ending alleys of trees.

Then popped out onto the foothills...

Where we followed the trails up the hills again... collecting tufts of feathers as we went.

We crept further up and up over the hills, ascending above the low cloud line and leaving any stress and drama behind us.

It's easy to clear the mind when the bigger focus is on so much more than daily stress. While I utterly love my job and building a wider client base with the expert team at WISP Global, there is no greater luxury than time outdoors.

Especially when your walking buddies are this darn cute...

...and the nature around just feels more and more beautiful with each step.

We wandered higher and higher, talking through our stresses and concerns, and watching the dogs as they ran further away in wide sweeps sniffing out all sorts.

After a while we whistled out to them to call them back in, time was marching on and the sun was dipping lower and lower.

A few toots of the whistle and they came racing down from the tops of the fells...

Apollo made it all the way back down and Aura found herself a little distracted en route... while we whistled for her, Apollo stared up smugly.

The low sun dipped further...

...we regrouped, praising them for returning despite all the lovely temptations.

We made our way back down the hill, walking with care over the wet soggy slippery ground...

Normally at the end of a walk we collapse into the car and that's it.

Except, this time we meandered through the little villages, playing fantasy house buying as we went.

Actually, just on the end of the Trough of Bowland last year we visited two huge farm houses that were up for sale. The one was a huge old farm house but non standard in construction which would have made any mortgages or structural alterations difficult - not to mention it was situated next door to a storage reservoir and in the back garden had a well which never ran dry and not to mention the 3ft of water in the basement... um, 1+1 = a pretty darn big leak...

Anyway, the other was a non starter too, in that it was inhabited by sheep and pigeons with creepy stains on the walls.

Okay back to the drive home...

We meandered through the little lanes past beautiful homes...

...screeching to halts for passing traffic,

...trying desperately not to ask why on earth they were crossing the road...

Then past fields of beautiful fluffy sheep,

...and a whole lotta pheasants.

We made it to another lookout point, checking out the last rays of sunlight which danced over the bay...

We parked up the old Mitsubishi Outlander, a fantastic stead, and perfect workhorse...

Then ambled around the view point, discovering that all sorts of historic treasures lay below...

The Quernmore Burial was discovered in this spot, basically it was a tree trunk which was used for burials...

With goosebumps we jumped back in the car with the last light remaining, looked out onto the snow capped hills for one final farewell.

Then made outr way back into Lancaster...
